New Info, Long Overdue

So it’s been a very long while since I’ve updated, and during that time, many things have changed — not the least of which is that most of the buy links here are no longer active.

If you’ve been following the drama in the gay romance publishing world, you probably know why.

At the moment, the only links here that work are for my spy series (the Farmingdale Gentlemen’s Club)and my Christmas story The Second Door.

Did Someone Say Blog Tour? Why yes… yes, they did! :P

Well, it’s finally happened. Someone caught me at just the right time for me to say “Yes” to taking part in a blog tour. In this case, it was the always fun and interesting AR Moler, with whom I spent a bit of time at the Coastal Magic convention in Florida earlier this month. So when she asked, I said “Hell, yeah!” (To be fair, I was all hopped up on cold meds at the time, but as this has been such a painless process, I may actually consider doing something like this again!)

In this particular case, the point of this tour is to give a small overview of the writing process, so here we go. Hopefully some of you will find it interesting. LOL So…

What am I working on?

Just today? Or in general? Haha!

I’ve been working on the next book in the LalaLand Chronicles, off and on, while also working on three different paranormal stories, one of which is being co-written with the amazing Kiernan Kelly! I’m finishing up the final phases of a story I’ve written for an anthology that will be releasing soon, and I’m also considering a few other new ventures.

As most of you know, I’ve primarily written contemporary gay romance and some action gay romance (by which I mean my Farmingdale Gentleman’s Club series with Totally Bound… which I’m also working on the fifth volume of). I haven’t really written much paranormal fiction, aside from a short story I wrote in 2009 called ‘Trine,’ which was my first foray into the paranormal world and is still available from Torquere Press, if anyone’s interested. There’s a link on the “STAND ALONES” page, here on my site.

How does my work differ from others of its genre?

I don’t know that it’s entirely unique, but I tend to focus more on the internal struggles of my characters than on external factors. I like to explore what each character is going through and why… then put them through the wringer on their path to their Happily Ever After. I’ve been called an angst-whore more than once (again, not totally unique within this genre LOL), and I tend to enjoy putting my guys in situations of economic disparity that cause them to examine their own concepts of what a man is and what makes a man… and what makes a man a good man, or a bad one. Perception of self is sort of a theme of mine.

Why do I write what I do?

This is a good question but I’m not sure I have a good answer, though I’m going to give it a try. Haha!

I think part of the reason I write gay romance is that I love men. They’re pretty damned awesome, even when they’re being giant pains in the ass, you know? But why gay men (or bisexual men, as many of my main characters are) is something else again. I think it probably goes back to spending much of my life surrounded by close friends who were and are gay. I’ve been immersed in ‘gay culture’ more often than not (or as I like to call it, ‘culture,’) and one of the many things I’ve discovered over the years is that we’re not all that different — gay (of either gender), straight, bi, trans, male, female… We’re all human and we all want the same things. We want people we can trust and love, who trust and love us.

We want a place in the world where we know we belong. We want to be able to live with a reasonable expectation that we’ll be just as safe and secure as the next person, regardless of sexuality, gender, or biology. In that sense, I think we really are all the same.

Also, I truly do find the power dynamic between two men to be fascinating. Ultimately, they have to find a balance that works for them (I know, I know, that’s true of heterosexual relationships, too). It’s just interesting to me to figure out how two strong, very different men, both of whom have had certain societal roles thrust upon them by virtue of having penises, find a way to balance their lives with each other’s.

I’m not entirely sure that this answer makes sense, but it’s the best I can do. Sorry!

How does your writing process work?

As with many other authors, in my own genre and in others, there isn’t just one way.

I’m not one of those who plots everything out and has a plan for a whole story. I generally know how a book is going to start and I usually have a vague idea about how it’s going to end (though I’ve been surprised a few times), but I rarely have a single clue about how I’m going to get my characters from point A to point Z.

Sometimes an idea for a story comes to me fully formed, while other times I might find a single line of dialogue stuck in my head. If I like that line enough, I’ll ask myself “Okay, so what would lead up to someone saying this?” The answer usually has details and scenes opening up in my head like a particularly large and colorful flower.

Once I have my idea and a slight understanding of start and finish, I just get to it. Every once in a while I’ll start to make notes as I write, just to keep things clear in my head. Eventually it’s done, and I can move on to another plot bunny… until edits! LOL

Technophobe on board! (Or so it seems.)

It was recently pointed out to me — very kindly, might I add — that I am a slackery slacker who is more than a little bit afraid of the internet. Or not afraid OF it, precisely, but afraid of breaking it. (In other words, Tracy reminded me that I haven’t updated this site in over a year. *blushes* Refer to the ‘slackery slacker’ comment above. thanks.)

 

In the time since my last post here, I’ve had five books release (though one was an anthology with several other authors so I’m not sure it counts). If any of you have been waiting to hear that something new was out and were relying on my mad ‘puter skills, let me just say “Ooops,” and “Sorry!” In any case, things are updated now, and I can’t SWEAR that it’ll help, but I’ve programmed my phone to remind me every month. Assuming I actually did that right, of course, because who knows?

 

So for those who may not know which books came out since my last visit here at ye olde word press, they are “Butt Pirates In Space” (anthology), “A Game of Schemes” (FGC #4, from TEB), “Concord Grape: Unexpected” (Fruit Basket #6, from Torquere), “The One That Gave (One & One series #5, Torquere), and the first book of my brand new series (The Lala-Land Chronicles), titled “Elided Cadence,” which is also available from… you guessed it! Torquere! Hahaha!

 

As for what I’m currently working on, there’s the fifth FGC novel, a ninja story for another anthology, the second book in the new series, a quasi sci-fi-ish thing (been working on this one forever, though, so no idea when or even if it’ll be finished), and an alternate universe/urban fantasy-ish type thing. Also the story of how Rory and Matthew (from the Conventions series) met and what their deal is, anyway. No promises on when that one will be done. It’s been back-burnered for a while but I do occasionally work on it.*grins*

 

My non-writing life remains much the same, though my health is generally improved from the last time I posted here. I’m still on blood meds, but I can live with that. I mean, it’s one pill, once a day, so… no big. 😀

 

Mom’s gotten much more crazy, but that’s one of the hazards of aging. She’s still going strong (or as strong as someone mumblety-mumble years old can).

 

I’ve given up my dream to be the next famous pop star, mostly because someone made me listen to a recording of my singing voice. I suppose I could put out a record for dogs. Attack dogs. To get them riled up. (I’m kidding. Dogs don’t buy records.)

 

Oh, I did go to Olde City, New Blood back in February, down in Florida. It was a lot of fun. 🙂 I also attended OutlantaCon in May and Dragon*Con this past Labor Day weekend.

 

At Dragon*Con, I sat on several writing panels, along with the always lovely Kiernan Kelly and the equally fabulous Kage Alan. This is something I’ve done before, so it was more or less old hat, you know? Right up until Saturday night and the LGBT in SF/F panel (that’s science fiction/fantasy, in case you didn’t know, though you probably did. *grins*).

 

Now, Kiernan will back me up on this, so I’m totally not bullshitting you guys. I swear!

 

Guess who else was on the panel with us. No, really. Guess.

 

*whistles quietly and counts to ten*

 

Give up? Well, if you guessed MERCEDES LACKEY, who is one of the very, very few people I get squee-ish over, you’d be right! Seriously! I was on a panel with MERCEDES LACKEY!!! I mean, I grew up on her books. I’ve admired the fuck out of her ability to tell a good story. I’ve probably read every single thing she’s ever written… and I WAS ON A PANEL WITH HER???

 

Yeah, I’m pretty sure nothing will ever top that. EVER.

 

Okay, so THAT’S it. It’s been a busy year so far and I’ve finally updated this word press. I really am going to try to be better about that. Everyone join me in thanking Tracy for reminding me gently that I need to be less scared of breaking the internet. *grins*

Because Life is Just Like That! :)

Okay, it’s been a while since I’ve posted an update, but life has been kinda crazy.

What’s that? Did I just hear you thinking “and what else is new? Your life is ALWAYS crazy, Tis… at least it is if I’m gonna believe everything you write… on the rare occasion that you can be bothered to keep me posted, anyway…”? Why, yes. I think I DID hear you thinking that. Doesn’t make it less true, though. 😛

Since the last time I shared (possibly overshared) the current story of my life, there have been a few changes.

First, the good stuff. *grins*

The next (and final, I think) book in the Fruit Basket series is scheduled for release on May 16. For those who’ve been wanting the story of the twinkies-three, I hope you’re not disappointed. I really do think this might be the last book in the series, though you know me. Never say never. LOL

I’m doing a final pass-through before submitting what will, if accepted, be the next book in the One & One series. It’s provisionally titled ‘The One That Gave’ but that could change. Ever wonder what the story was with the so-pretty nurse, Lex, who appeared in both ‘The One That Stayed’ and ‘The One That Broke Free’? You just might be finding out sometime later this year! *grins*

I had a story published a little while ago in the ‘Po’Boys’ Anthology, from Torquere Press. While it is a stand alone story, it also gives a little insight into the character of Andrew Lyon (who appeared in the third ‘Conventions’ book, ‘Unconventional’) and takes place in New Orleans, a town that I absolutely love. I have to love it. I lived there for six years! The story is called Sexual Frankenstein and I hope you’ll give it a shot! (I’ve added an ‘Anthologies’ page to the site, under the books-by-series tab. Check it out for blurbs and buy links.)

I’ve started work on what I think will be the first story in a new series, but I’m not going to say too much about that right now. just that it’s a contemporary… sort of… and a fantasy… also sort of. 😛 Confused yet? Lord knows *I* am!

Also under the category of ‘fun stuff,’ I’m attending OutlantaCon next weekend with the always-lovely Kage Alan! (He’s kinda my GBF — gay boyfriend. LOL) If anyone’s going to be in the area, do stop by and show your support for this wonderful and smallish GLBT-centric convention by attending! 🙂 There are a fair number of authors, artists, and other guests who’ll be there, and lots of panels and parties and things. It’ll be my first time at this particular con, so if you do make it, PLEASE find me and say hi! 😀

Now, the less fun stuff — aka, Tis whingeing and moaning about things. Well, really just one thing. With many parts. Heh-heh.

So back on April 1st, after a couple weeks of feeling kinda crappy and uninterested in even leaving the house-sweet-dumpy-apartment, I walked into my place from right down the hall and all of a sudden couldn’t breathe. My heart was racing, I broke out in a cold sweat, and I couldn’t see because my vision all of a sudden went so sparkly that I could have been examining a Twilight-esque vampire with a microscope. (This was NOT GOOD.)

I tried to wait it out, thinking it’d pass, but though it did fade slightly, as soon as I stood up or tried to walk, it not only returned but became worse.

After a while, I decided to bite the proverbial bullet (far less fun than biting a person, but whatever) and called 911, which actually resulted in an ambulance arriving far more quickly than I’d expected. After only two minutes or so, the EMTs wheeled me out of my building on a stretcher and sped me off to hospital. (Oh, joy. Oh, rapture.)

So it turns out I have blood clots in my lungs.There’s a medical term for this but I can’t spell it, and frankly, why bother. I’m not a doctor. Apparently these blood clots were elsewhere and got jogged loose, at which time they decided my lungs looked like prime real estate. They took up residence and tried to assert squatters rights.

So after two weeks in hospital, they finally cut me loose with sheafs of papers in my hands and an rather alarming list of medications to take. Bleh.

Now, I’m not actually complaining, here. Things could have been worse and I’m honestly feeling fine. The two weeks kind of threw me, though. I tend to live according to a self-designed schedule, and not being home (and not having my computer) for that amount of time was disturbing. LOL

(On a side note, I’m trying to reach Tracy Faul. She emailed me about something while I was in hospital and I somehow deleted the email via my phone while I was there. If Tracy is reading this or if someone else reading knows her, please let her know that I’m not ignoring her and to please try me again!) (EDIT: Mission accomplished! Tracy found me, so no worries, anyone!)

There’s a whole story about my incarceration at the hospital, involving shots and blood being drawn and my 97 year old, incontinent, deaf-but-heard-voices roommate, but that’s way too long to type. I’ll just say… if there’s a next time, and I hope there won’t be, my favorite words will be ‘Private Room!”

Included in the ‘less fun’ category is Mum’s medical issues, too. Seems like the last few months have been all about health, doesn’t it? Mum’s been up and down for a while now, as most of you know from reading my ramblings. I have to say it truly sucks when she was sick while I was sick. I wanted to be there for her but the doctors and such wouldn’t let me leave the hospital and Mum and I don’t live close enough that we were at the same one. We’re both out now, though, so things are all right for the moment. 🙂

Okay, back to the fun stuff now…

I may not have mentioned this before, but we have geese. Big, pretty, honking geese.

The King of Gooseville, who reigns over the goose/duck pond out back, apparently decided to survey his kingdom today, because when I went out on my balcony to enjoy the day (also known as checking to see what the hell the goddamned geese were honking about so loudly), he was standing on top of the building across the way. He seemed to be staring fixedly at the just-filled swimming pool and shouting his displeasure at the giant blue pond that wasn’t HIS. His courtiers were getting in on the action, as well, though I couldn’t tell whether their shouted honking was meant as support of his clear assertion that the big blue pond should belong to geese everywhere… or pointing out that with such clear blue water, there couldn’t possibly be any tasty bugs or fishies in there. Hmmm… and now I’m wondering what the ducks think.

So that’s about it, guys. My life in a nutshell (emphasis on the NUT).

Oh! I got sock-monkey slippers! They’re flippin’ awesome! 😀

For those who’ve been waiting, the sixth and final chapter of ‘The Irregular Regular’ is now up in the Free Reads section.

‘Berry Blue: Lessons Learned’ did release on the 25th, so that’s out there now. *whew!*

The next One & One books is coming along well (for the moment, heh-heh), and the anthology story I mentioned is a go. Yay!

In other news, my refrigerator died a quick, messy death (water ALL over the flor, ewwwwww), which has severely screwed with my life.

My Mom’s still doing well, so I’m cool with pretty much everything else life throws at me, though she’s back to her calling me every day to tell me everything she’s done in the twenty-four hours since the last time. At length. With replays. LOL

Life is pretty darn good at the moment. Hope it’s going well for you guys, too! 🙂

Welcome to Bedlam! *grins*

Okay, so WAY back in the day, ‘bedlam’ was a term that became synonomous with madhouse (nuthouse, funny farm, whatever… so many phrases for one simple thing). This word perfectly describes my life of late. *hee*

See that? The first sign of utter lunacy — giggling maniacally to one’s self. Heh.

For those who’ve been keeping up with my sometimes rambling (though infrequent) commentary, Mum’s feeling better. There was a truly rough patch for her, during which I had to hire a live-in caregiver for her, but she’s much better now and no longer requires as much supervision. So, *whew*!

But that’s only part of the crazy.

As some of you may know, my first story for Dreamspinner Press (The Second Door) was released in November. As it’s a Christmas story (novella), that makes sense. *grins* Then my Christmas novel for Torquere (Someone Special) came out. Edits galore! *hee*

At the same time, I was finishing up the manuscript for ‘Berry Blue: Lessons Learned’ (book 5 in the Fruit basket series, and the cover can be seen on my ‘coming soon-ish’ page), working on the sixth book (more on that soon), trying to get a short written for an anthology, AND working on/waiting for edits for the third FGC book, ‘A Game of Hearts’, with Total-E-Bound (this one released Jan. 9). Since Mum was still unwell at the time, things were nuts! Heh.

So, ‘Berry Blue’ will release on the 25th. I’ll be on the Torquere Social LJ on the 26th, doing my usual random rambling, posting excerpts, having contests and so on. (Just in case anyone feels like stopping by.)

In the meantime, I’m finishing up another MS (just need the epilogue), getting ready to dive into another One & One book (yep, returning to that series for the fifth story — more about that next time) AND considering starting an entirely different series, because I’m apparently a glutton for punishment. Heh-heh.

Lots of plans for 2012. Whether I have an equal amount of motivation remains to be seen. *hee*

Lots of Stuff! LOL

Okay, so I last posted during the brief period of time between GRL and Yaoi Con (I had wonderful times at both events, btw!). Then — literally the day after I got back from S.F., I came down with the most miserable case of flu I’ve ever been unlucky enough to experience. I’m still not entirely better, but being at 90% beats the merry heck out of being at 20%, right? Heh-heh.

Loads of writing news, starting with Christmas stories! That’s right, I said STORIES, as in more than one! Two, in fact. 🙂 In the interests of NOT repeating the same stuff over and over, I’ll be adding the pertinent info to the ‘Coming Soon’ page here on ye olde wordpress, along with info on other stories coming in the next few months.

I’ve been working on what will likely be the final story in the Fruit Basket series and I’m happy to say that it’s coming along well. Pauly, Randy and James wouldn’t have it any other way. 😛 I’ve been told it’s already on the schedule for 2012, though I’ll have more info on exactly when later.

Those of you who stopped by the Torquere Social LJ the last time I was on have probably noticed that I completely dropped the ball with the contests and such. This is not because I’m a slacker (well, not JUST because of that) but due to the fact that LJ as a whole was being an a-hole. By the time it wasn’t, the entire thing had slipped my mind. I’ll be over there again on November 24, at which time I will award the prizes for the past contests as well as have other contests. Assuming technology isn’t hating me that day (because I never know ahead of time), I’ll handle things in a MUCH more timely manner.

Let’s see… other stuff… Oh! I’m going to see my BFF in upstate NY for Thanksgiving this year, so that should be fun. Nothing like spending a week in a 3 bedroom house with 2 adults, 3 kids, 2 dogs and 4 cats to provide a restful holiday, right? *hee* (Honestly, the only part that’s a bit of a pain is that there’s only the one bathroom. LOL The rest of it really IS a good time! :D)

Jiggedy Jig

So I’m finally home from GRL, after a 3+ hour flight delay during which the PILOT and a maintenance man fixed the BRAKES on the PLANE!!! I mean, seriously. Not an airplane mechanic but a maintenance dude and the fucking PILOT! How bizarre is that?

There’s a whole story about my keys (house, car, etc.), but I posted that on FB so I won’t repeat it here. LOL

Upshot is, I went to GayRomLit in New Orleans and had a great time meeting readers and other authors. It was amazing how effortless it was to just wander up to a group and join in with them! 😀

For those who were on the fence about attending GRL, as it was a new gathering, I heartily recommend that you plan on attending next year’s retreat, which is going to be in New Mexico! Yes, it seems likely that we’ll lose the allure of 24 hour bars (and video poker machines, which is a good thing for me :P), but it sounds like an amazing venue and the retreat itself will likely prove to be just as super as the one just past, if not more so!

In writing news, I’ve been told that my X-mas novel from TQ will be out in November, as will my X-mas novella with Dreamspinner. The next Fruit Basket/Rainbow series book, ‘Berry Blue’ is slated for release Jan. 25 (I think), and the 3rd FGC book should be available sometime in February or March, to the best of my recollection, from TEB.

Now I’m off to sleep. Mum is having Tis withdrawals, apparently, and I need to go visit her in the morning. 🙂

Because I suck…

Okay, it should be very obvious by now (via past performance) that I suck ass at updating stuff. I don’t even have a good excuse because everything’s pretty much the same as it’s been for the last year or so.

Mum’s still old (about to turn 93! Good for her; if I live that long I’m sure to be just as demanding as SHE can be! LOL), she’s still more than slightly crazy, and I’M still caught between real life and writing. Heh.

Basically, I haven’t had fuck-all to say here because I’ve been busy, and that’s not an excuse, just a statement of fact. *grins*

As far as writing goes, the fourth book in my Fruit Basket series (from Torquere) will be released on Saturday, July 30. It’s called Guava Red: Almost Paradise, and it’s possibly the least angsty story I’ve ever written. I’m actually very fond of it and I hope those who read it will be, too. Here’s the cover, btw! *hee*

In other writing news, I’ve just signed the contract with TEB for the third Farmingdale Gentleman’s Club book, A Game of Hearts, and it’s expected to release around Christmas time, though it’s not a Christmas story. *grins*

Speaking of Christmas, I have two holiday-themed stories coming out in November/December. One, from Torquere, is a novel-length story entitled ‘Someone Special’ while the other is coming from Dreamspinner Press and is titled ‘The Second Door’ (trust me, the title makes sense).

Also in the November/December timeline (as far as I know right now) is the fifth Fruit Basket story, the novel-length Berry Blue: Lessons Learned. This will be the story of Riley’s uncle Peter and… well, you’ll see. *hee* It’s complicated. (Shocking, I know. A complicated story coming from ME??? How bizarre, right? :P)

I’m also gearing up for travel, which is always fun. *insert sarcasm here*

Taking Mum to New Jersey in a couple weeks to see Satan and the Grandspawn (meaning my brother and his kids). When I’m back from that, it’s off to Dragon*Con, where my dearest love Kage and I will hopefully be participating in some panels for the writing track. Then I’m off to new Orleans for GayRomLit, and trying to go to Yaoi Con right after (literally right after — if I DO go to YC, I’ll be home for a whole day and a half between GRL and YC!) And somewhere in there, I need to fit in a week or more to visit with my BFF, Scarlet, and her kids and Mum! All while engaged in edits on four — yes, FOUR — different books! LOL

So the upshot, I suppose, is that this will probably be one of very few updatey posts for the next few months, and possibly longer.

I’m going to TRY to post a buy-link to Guava Red once I have one, and I’m scheduled to be hosting over at the Torquere Social LJ (http://torquere-social.livejournal.com/ ) on Saturday, assuming LJ is working then, but I’ll likely be incredibly scarce until after the New Year. NOT because I don’t want to keep in touch, but because there literally aren’t enough hours in the day.

If it helps at all, think of it as… I’m not talking much because I’m doing everything i can to keep giving everyone new reading material! *hee*

Oh, for those who like physical books rather than the digital variety, I’ve been told that the entire Fruit Basket series, to date, will also be released in print on July 30! The first two stories — ‘Lemon Yellow: Making Lemonade’ and ‘Lime Green: Margarita Mondays’ — have been combined into one volume (Lemonade & Margaritas) because they were both novellas, but ‘Mandarin Orange: Sweet & Sour’ and the new one, ‘Guava Red: Almost Paradise’, each have their own volumes. I’ll be adding an ‘In Print’ category to the sidebar soon, once I have the appropriate buy links. Future stories in the series will also be available in print at the same time they are released in digital format, so I’m fully chuffed! *grins*
